Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰嗽, 面浮如盤. 蚌粉(新瓦上炒令通紅, 放地上出火毒) 每半兩, 加靑黛 一錢, 以淡虀水滴入麻油數點調服, 卽愈. 《醫說》

Translation

Treats phlegm cough with the face swollen like a platter. Clam shell powder, dry-fried on a new tile until it is red through and then set on the ground to let the fire toxin out, half a nyang at a time, with 1 don of indigo added; give it stirred into thin brine with a few drops of sesame oil dripped in, and the patient is cured at once. — Uiseol 醫說 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

面浮如盤 — the face swollen like a platter — is the sign that picks this formula out: puffiness of the face in a patient with a productive cough. A modern reader will think of the facial oedema of cor pulmonale or of superior vena caval obstruction, and the Bogam reaches for calcined shell, which is lime, with indigo for the heat. 放地上出火毒 — set on the ground to let the fire toxin out — is a standard step after calcining, and the oil and brine are there to make a dose of chalk swallowable. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
