Translation

Treats shaoyin disease with guest heat and a sore throat. Pork skin, 1 nyang, in 1 cup of water, boiled down to 5 fun; add 1 hop of white honey and half a hop of rice flour parched until fragrant and done, mix evenly and take. The pig is a water animal and its qi enters the kidney, and so it can resolve shaoyin guest heat; white honey moistens dryness and dispels vexation; rice flour boosts the qi and cuts off the diarrhoea. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Pork skin boiled to a broth with honey and parched rice flour, which is food and not medicine — and in a patient with a raw throat who cannot swallow and has been losing fluid, food is the right prescription. Boiled pork skin is gelatin, honey is a demulcent and sugar, and parched rice flour thickens: the result is a smooth, cool, calorie-bearing slip that coats the pharynx on the way down. The five-phase explanation, that the pig is a water animal whose qi enters the kidney, is decoration over a sound piece of nursing. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
