Translation

Treats shaoyin guest cold with a sore throat. Processed pinellia, cinnamon twig and honey-roasted licorice, 2 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and swallow it in small sips. — Junggyeong 仲景 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The cold-throat counterpart to Gamcho-tang, and the pairing is the section's best piece of discrimination: a sore throat may come from heat or from cold, and the same patient in the same shaoyin pattern needs opposite treatment depending on which. Pinellia and cinnamon twig are warm and acrid, licorice moderates them, and the instruction to swallow in small sips keeps the medicine in contact with the throat rather than sending it straight to the stomach. A throat that is sore but pale and worse for cold drinks is the case, and recognizing it as distinct from an inflamed red throat is worth the entry. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
