Translation

Supplements the heart and engenders blood; quiets the spirit and settles the will. It is taken by those who wear themselves out at affairs of state in the chancellery, who toil over their books by lamplight, and who have forgetfulness, fearful throbbing and sleeplessness, or who do not remember well and forget much — and it enables a man to recite a thousand words in a day and to store ten thousand scrolls in his breast. Polygala (processed with ginger), longan flesh, raw dried rehmannia (washed in wine), scrophularia, cinnabar and acorus, 3 don each; ginseng, white poria spirit, angelica (washed in wine), spiny jujube seed (stir-fried), ophiopogon and arborvitae seed (oil pressed out), 2 don each. Powder them, mix with the heart blood of a gelded pig and make pills the size of a mung bean, coat with gold leaf, and take twenty or thirty with glutinous rice decoction. — Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

臺閣勤政勞心, 燈窓讀書辛苦 — those worn out by affairs of state and those toiling over books by lamplight. The indication names two occupations rather than a pattern, and the name, Prime Scholar, says what it was sold on. The composition is sober enough despite that: 歸脾湯's longan and jujube seed, 天王補心丹's rehmannia and scrophularia, and 遠志ㆍ石菖蒲 for the orifices. **Leave out the cinnabar and the gold leaf.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
