Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

夫人之臍也, 受生之初, 父精母血相受凝結以成胞胎. 在母腹中, 母呼兒呼, 母吸兒吸, 是一身臍帶如花果在枝而通蔕也. 旣生之後, 從口呼吸, 臍門自閉. 旣長之後, 外耗精神, 內傷生冷, 眞氣不得條暢. 所以蒸臍固蔕, 如水灌土培, 草木自茂壯也. 人參ㆍ附子ㆍ胡椒 各七錢, 夜明砂ㆍ沒藥ㆍ虎骨ㆍ蛇骨ㆍ龍骨ㆍ五靈脂ㆍ白附子ㆍ朱砂ㆍ麝香 各五錢, 靑鹽ㆍ茴香 各四錢, 丁香ㆍ雄黃ㆍ乳香ㆍ木香 各三錢. 右爲末. 用白麪作條圈於臍上, 將前藥一料分爲三分, 內取一分, 先塡麝香末五分入臍孔內, 乃將一分藥入麪圈內, 按藥令緊, 中揷數孔, 外用槐皮一片盖於藥上, 以艾火灸之. 婦人腹冷無子尤宜此灸, 去麝香加小腦一錢. 《入門》

Translation

A person's navel: at the beginning of receiving life, the father's essence and the mother's blood take each other and congeal to form the womb-embryo. In the mother's belly, when the mother breathes out the child breathes out and when she breathes in the child breathes in — the navel cord of the whole body is like a flower or fruit on the branch, joined at the stem. Once born, one breathes through the mouth and the navel gate shuts of itself; once grown, the essence-spirit is spent without and cold raw food damages within, and the true qi cannot run freely. Therefore steaming the navel secures the stem, as watering and banking the earth makes the grass and trees grow strong of themselves. Ginseng, aconite and pepper 7 don each; bat droppings, myrrh, tiger bone, snake bone, dragon bone, flying-squirrel droppings, typhonium, cinnabar and musk 5 don each; blue salt and fennel 4 don each; clove, realgar, frankincense and costus 3 don each. Powder them. Make a ring of white flour dough on the navel; divide one batch of the powder into three parts, take one part, first pack 5 pun of powdered musk into the navel hole, then put one part of the medicine inside the dough ring, press it firm, pierce several holes in the middle, cover with a slice of pagoda-tree bark, and burn moxa on it. For a woman whose belly is cold and who has no child this moxa is especially suitable — leave out the musk and add 1 don of borneol. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Je)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The preamble is the chapter's whole argument: in the womb the child breathes through the navel, and after birth the gate shuts — so to warm a spent body one opens it again. The dough ring, the packed powder, the bark lid and the moxa on top are the standard apparatus, and the two formulas that follow use the same one. **Tiger bone is from a CITES Appendix I species and its trade is banned worldwide; musk is CITES-listed.
