Translation

Treats every vacuity and the hundred damages in a woman, the five taxations and the seven damages, a menstrual cycle that has lost its order, and alternating cold and heat with a wasted body. Angelica and atractylodes, 1 don each; white poria, tangerine peel, anemarrhena, fritillary, cyperus prepared in child's urine, lycium bark, ophiopogon and wine-fried white peony, 8 fun each; bupleurum, mint and liquorice, 5 fun each. Cut the above to make one packet, add three slices of ginger, and decoct in water. — Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Thirteen herbs and a slice of ginger, built for the woman the chapter calls hollowed out — long tired, thin, her cycle unreliable, hot in the afternoon and cold at night. The architecture is plain once the pieces are sorted: angelica and peony for the blood, atractylodes and poria for the centre, ophiopogon and anemarrhena and lycium bark for the dry heat that rises in a depleted body, bupleurum and mint to let it out at the surface, cyperus and tangerine peel so that none of it sits heavy. Fritillary is the odd one in and belongs to the dry cough such patients keep. Nothing here is strong. Its interest is the pattern it was written for, which is recognisable in a modern clinic: the alternating cold and heat with weight loss and a stalled cycle that turns out to be thyroid disease, anaemia, tuberculosis or an eating disorder as often as it turns out to be exhaustion. The formula is a reasonable support and a poor substitute for finding out which. **The cyperus is prepared in child's urine, a human-derived material that is not used in contemporary practice; it is recorded here as text.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
