Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治牙齒痛不可忍, 微惡寒飮, 大惡熱飮. 草龍膽(酒洗) 三錢, 防風一錢, 升麻七分, 甘草(灸) 五分, 細辛三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎去滓, 以匙抄在口中, 渫痛處少頃卽止. 如多惡熱飮, 加龍膽一錢. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats unbearable toothache with slight aversion to cold drink and strong aversion to hot. Gentian (wine-washed) 3 don; saposhnikovia 1 don; cimicifuga 7 pun; licorice (mix-fried) 5 pun; asarum 3 pun. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and strain; take it up on a spoon and hold it in the mouth over the painful place, and in a little while it stops. If the aversion to hot drink is strong, add 1 don of gentian.

Clinical commentary 臨床

微惡寒飮, 大惡熱飮 — a little averse to cold drink and very averse to hot. 4.3.3 gives the test plainly: a hot toothache dreads cold water, a cold one dreads hot water, and one that dreads neither is wind. Two sips tell you which formula to reach for. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
