Translation

Treats dry cough arising from taxation vacuity with scant blood, where dry heat overrides the lung, with the hawking and spitting of pus and blood, and coughing at the least exposure to cold. Chinese angelica, chuanxiong and white peony, 1 don 5 fun each; red poria, ginseng, pinellia, tangerine peel, ass-hide gelatin beads, asarum, schisandra and licorice, 7 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, and decoct with three slices of ginger and two jujubes. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang without the rehmannia, carrying Ijin-tang's poria, pinellia and tangerine peel, with ass-hide gelatin for the blood and schisandra and asarum for the cough. Blood drugs at a don and a half against cough drugs at seven fun: the weighting says plainly which the formula takes to be the cause. The presentation it is for — a dry cough, blood and pus in the sputum, wasting, and coughing whenever the patient is chilled — is pulmonary tuberculosis as it was seen before any treatment existed. **A patient coughing blood needs chest imaging and sputum examination.** **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and to be properly processed, and asarum, which modern pharmacopoeias restrict to smaller doses.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
