Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter's pill for the interval rather than the attack: 久喘未發時服人參半夏丸, taken when the long-standing panting is not breaking out, with Chimhyang-goldam-hwan kept for when it does. That is a maintenance-and-rescue division, and it is the same distinction a modern patient keeps between a preventer and a reliever. 茶痰 — tea phlegm — is worth noticing in the indication list: phlegm attributed to drinking tea, which the period's physicians treated as a cause in its own right. The formula itself is built on the two cold minerals, clam shell and glauberite, with pinellia and arisaema for the phlegm and ginseng and poria to hold the middle. **Contains pinellia and arisaema, both toxic in the raw state and requiring proper processing, and alum, which is irritant in quantity.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
