Donguibogam

Translation

Treats mania as a disorder of the heart. Ash-free wine, two bowls; genuine sesame oil, 4 nyang. Mix them evenly and stir with twenty willow twigs, one after another a hundred or two hundred strokes each, changing through all the twigs, until the oil and wine have entered each other like a paste; boil it down to seven-tenths of a bowl and pour it in forcibly, so that the patient sleeps soundly. Whether he vomits or not, when he wakes he is in his right mind. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This is not to be used.** Two bowls of wine poured forcibly into an agitated patient is alcohol poisoning by intent, and the oil raises the risk of aspiration if he vomits. The emulsion made by beating oil into wine with willow twigs is a genuine piece of pharmacy, and the name is candid about the mechanism: one drunkenness. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
