Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治狂疾. 黃芩 二兩, 黃連ㆍ生地黃ㆍ知母 各一兩, 甘草 五錢. 右剉, 每五錢, 水煎服. 《脉訣》

Translation

Treats manic illness. Scutellaria 2 nyang; coptis, raw rehmannia, and anemarrhena, 1 nyang each; licorice 5 don. Cut the above; take 5 don each time, decocted in water. — Maekgyeol 脉訣 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five herbs, and the two moistening ones are what distinguish it — raw rehmannia and anemarrhena, so that draining the fire does not leave the ground scorched. The chapter uses it where mania presents as heat rather than as phlegm, which is the fork that decides between this and the arisaema-and-bamboo formulas. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
