Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治積熱, 除毒熱, 開三焦, 利五藏, 口瘡, 重舌, 喉閉, 腸癰等證. 朴硝 八兩, 蘇木 六錢, 黃芩ㆍ升麻ㆍ羚羊角 各三錢, 赤芍藥ㆍ人參ㆍ檳榔ㆍ枳殼ㆍ竹葉ㆍ木香ㆍ甘草 各二錢, 梔子ㆍ葛根ㆍ木通ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ藍葉ㆍ大靑 各一錢半, 朱砂 一錢, 麝香 五分. 右除朴硝ㆍ朱砂ㆍ麝香外, 細剉, 以水二升五合, 同煎至九合, 濾去滓, 煎沸, 下朴硝, 以柳枝不住手攪. 候凝, 次下朱砂ㆍ麝香末, 盛磁器中. 經宿卽成, 每取一二錢, 新汲水調下. 《局方》

Translation

Treats accumulated heat, removes toxic heat, opens the three burners and disinhibits the five viscera; treats sores of the mouth, double tongue, throat closure, intestinal welling abscess and the like. Crude mirabilite 8 nyang; sappan 6 don; scutellaria, cimicifuga and antelope horn 3 don each; red peony, ginseng, areca, bitter orange, bamboo leaf, costus and licorice 2 don each; gardenia, pueraria, akebia, mulberry root bark, indigo plant leaf and woad leaf 1 don 5 pun each; cinnabar 1 don; musk 5 pun. Setting aside the mirabilite, cinnabar and musk, cut the rest fine and decoct together in 2 seung 5 hop of water down to 9 hop; strain off the dregs, bring to the boil, put in the mirabilite and stir constantly with a willow branch. When it sets, add the powdered cinnabar and musk and put it in a porcelain vessel; after a night it is done. Take 1 or 2 don at a time stirred into newly drawn water. — Hwaje Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Hwa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The companion to Purple Snow and made the same way — a saline crystallization stirred with a willow branch until it sets. Red rather than purple because sappan colours it. 重舌, double tongue, is swelling beneath the tongue; 喉閉, throat closure, is airway obstruction by swelling. Both are infections of the mouth and throat, and the formula's indications are more specific than Purple Snow's. Indigo plant leaf and woad leaf are registered in this database from this entry; both are standing remedies for heat toxin and both remain in use. **Contains antelope horn and musk, CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade, and cinnabar, which is mercury sulfide.
