Translation

Treats pain of the arm and shin, effective whether the pain is shallow or deep. Tiger shin bone (dry-fried until yellow and pounded to powder) 2 nyang, saiga antelope horn shavings 1 nyang, cut white peony 2 nyang. Steep the above in 5 seung of good wine — seven days in spring and summer, twice that in autumn and winter. Drink one cup daily on an empty stomach. If in winter you wish to take it sooner, hold it in a silver vessel set in a brazier for two or three days, and it may then be taken. — Boncho 本草 (Donguibogam · Su)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This formula cannot be made. Tiger bone is prohibited under CITES Appendix I and the US Endangered Species Act, and saiga antelope horn is CITES-listed with the species critically endangered; two of the three ingredients are unobtainable and unlawful, leaving no route to a faithful reconstruction. It is recorded here as a document of the classical materia medica, not as a prescription. Practitioners seeking the classical intent — reaching wind-damp lodged in sinew and bone — should look to gupan (龜板) and sokdan (續斷) with mokgwa (木瓜), or to the wind-damp decoctions earlier in this chapter. The white peony at 2 nyang, softening and relaxing the sinews, is the one part of the original thinking that transfers directly. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
