Another Method for Protecting the Eyes

Ilbang

한글 일방(호안)  ·  Pinyin Yi Fang

一方

The head of this leaf is literally 一方, another method, and not a name, so it is entered under an identifier taken from the section it stands in — the last of the three leaves of 1.85.20 護眼, at 070a. This follows the corpus precedent for unnamed leaves: gyeolhaek-ubang and yeongryu-ubang in the Sores chapter, sambuyak-ubang-1 and -2, chiseolri-ilbang, and chuldu-ubang and gijang-ubang in this same chapter. A second unnamed 一方 leaf stands in this chapter nine leaves earlier, at 2193 in 1.85.19 黑䧟, and takes its own section identifier. 䑕粘子 is printed 鼠粘子 and 為 is printed 爲, both following the corpus. 鼠粘子 is the burdock seed and resolves to ubangja through the alias table. 《蕭氏》 is not in the project source-label list; it is romanised Sossi on the pattern the corpus already uses for 湯氏 Tangssi and 錢氏 Jeonssi.

Translation

When the pox first comes out, powder burdock seed, mix it with water and paste it on the fontanelle; then the pox does not get into the eye. — Sossi 蕭氏 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The third of the 護眼 leaves, and the only one that keeps away from the eye. Burdock seed is ground, slaked with water, and pasted on the 顖門 — the anterior fontanelle, the soft gap at the top of the skull. Burdock seed is the drug this chapter reaches for throughout the pox sections to push an eruption out and to clear the throat, and it appears again two leaves later in the 七味甘桔湯; putting it on the vertex instead of into the child is positional reasoning, the fontanelle being understood as a gate standing above and behind the eyes. The fontanelle also dates the patient. It closes somewhere between about nine and eighteen months, so the leaf as written is addressed to a baby — which is worth noticing in a section whose other two leaves put oil and pigment next to that baby's cornea. Nothing applied to the scalp affected whether the cornea ulcerated, and the claim is false. But a water paste of burdock seed on intact scalp is harmless, and in this section that deserves saying outright: of the three methods offered for protecting a child's eyes, the one that does not work and cannot hurt is the one that never touches the eye. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
