Fleeceflower Root Powder

Hasuo-san

한글 하수오산  ·  Pinyin He Shou Wu San

何首烏散

The leaf identifies 蚵蚾草 with an interlinear note, 卽𦻎薟, and the drug is entered under that identification; the herb dictionary heads it 稀薟. The transcriber omitted the ≪≫ around the note, which is restored as an interlinear-note span. 𦻎 is kept for 豨 as transcribed, following the corpus elsewhere.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A dry powder taken in warm wine, and a wind formula throughout: schizonepeta spikes, clematis, vitex fruit, siegesbeckia and saposhnikovia are all drugs for wind at the surface and in the channels, with fleeceflower root as the one blood-and-essence drug and liquorice to harmonise. The wine is the vehicle because the formula is aimed at the exterior and the wine is held to carry the drugs outward. The leaf is worth noticing for its glossing: 蚵蚾草 is a local plant-name and the compiler stops to say which standard drug it is, 卽𦻎薟 — siegesbeckia. That is the kind of note that makes the Bogam usable, and the same drug is the basis of the 豨薟 preparations used for chronic wind-damp conditions. Read against the disease, this is an antipruritic rather than a cure. Nothing in it kills a scabies mite or a dermatophyte; what it addresses is the itch, and siegesbeckia and clematis both have some anti-inflammatory basis for that. The wine would not help an excoriated, infected skin. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
