Angelica Drink (Sores Formula)

Danggwi-eumja

한글 당귀음자  ·  Pinyin Dang Gui Yin Zi

當歸飮子

A different prescription from the 當歸飮子 of 濟生方 already registered as danggui-eumja, which is a clinic entry with no 底本 leaf behind it: that version uses 白芍藥 and a different set of dosages. By house rule the clinic entry keeps the bare id and this Bogam leaf takes the chapter tail.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one internal prescription in the 疥癬 section that is not a parasiticide at all. It is 四物湯 — angelica, peony, chuanxiong and rehmannia — with the surface drugs saposhnikovia, schizonepeta and tribulus laid over it, and astragalus and fleeceflower root behind. The reasoning is that a 遍身 eruption that itches and weeps is wind in a blood that cannot moisten the skin, so the blood is built up and the wind dispersed rather than the mite attacked. This leaf takes 赤芍藥, the red peony, rather than the white of the standard version, which shifts the formula from nourishing blood toward cooling and moving it — appropriate to a sore that is swollen and running pus. 當歸飮子 is still a prescription in use for chronic itching dermatoses, and of everything in this section it is the entry that transfers most honestly to modern practice. It will not cure scabies, which is a mite and needs permethrin or ivermectin; 腫痒流膿 is secondary bacterial infection and needs an antibiotic. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
