Donguibogam

Translation

Vomits out wind phlegm. Shrimp, half a geun; put in soybean paste, scallion, ginger and other seasonings and boil in water. First eat the shrimp, next drink the broth, and afterwards probe with a goose quill to draw the phlegm up and out. Shrimp is used because it draws the wind out. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of the least medicinal prescriptions in the book and one of the most honest. A pot of seasoned shrimp broth, eaten and drunk until the stomach is full, and then a goose feather at the back of the throat: that is the whole method. Danggye's gloss, that shrimp is used because it draws the wind out, is an after-the-fact rationalization of what is really a palatable bulk-filling emetic. The clinical logic — fill the stomach with something that will come up easily, then trigger the reflex — is sound enough on its own terms, and the one it resembles most is the modern use of warm water before induced emesis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
