Translation

Treats fire of the qi aspect obstructed and pent up in the centre, with stabbing pain arising from time to time. All of it comes from anger, worry and excessive thought, and from taxing the heart. Gardenia (salt-water fried) and angelica (wine-washed) 1 don 2 pun each; white atractylodes, tangerine peel and white poria 1 don each; red peony (wine-steeped), dried fresh rehmannia (wine-washed and ginger-juice fried) and cyperus 8 pun each; medicated leaven (stir-fried) and barley sprout (stir-fried) 7 pun each; chuanxiong 6 pun; peach kernel and raw licorice 4 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The aetiology is stated before the formula and is unusually specific: anger, worry, excessive thought, and taxing the heart. What follows is not a qi formula but a blood one — angelica at the head alongside gardenia, with red peony, rehmannia, chuanxiong and peach kernel behind them. The reasoning is that fire pent up in the qi aspect long enough draws the blood in, and that the stabbing quality of the pain is the sign of it. Stabbing pain is the classical marker of static blood, and the formula reads the symptom rather than the category. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
