Translation

The sage medicine for a long-standing qi cough. Tangerine peel and fresh ginger, pounded together and baked dry, 2 nyang each. Grind to a powder, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with a paste of 2 nyang of medicated leaven, and give thirty to fifty down with rice water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs and a binder, and the whole formula is the 嘔吐 chapter's pair of chief drugs for the qi — tangerine peel and ginger — pounded together before they are dried, so that the ginger's juice goes into the peel. The leaven is not only paste: it is the chapter's standard addition wherever food stagnation is suspected behind a cough. 氣嗽 in this chapter means the cough of a patient whose qi will not descend rather than one with an infection, and the formula is for the chronic case — 久患, long suffered. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
