Hollyhock Flower Powder

Gyuhwa-san

한글 규화산  ·  Pinyin Kui Hua San

葵花散

The transcription writes 欝金, normalized to 鬱金 among the standard 俗字 corrections. 梔子 and 黃栢 are left as the transcription prints them. Bare 葵花 is entered under 蜀葵花, the hollyhock flower, which is the id the corpus uses for 紅葵花 and 黃蜀葵花 elsewhere. All five drugs are 各等分, so none carries a weight.

Translation

Treats every kind of hot sore. Curcuma, coptis, phellodendron, gardenia and hollyhock flower, in equal parts. Powder the above, mix to a paste with cold water and lay it on; wonderfully effective. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The simplest dressing in the section: five cooling drugs, equal parts, powdered, and mixed with cold water alone — no oil, no fat, no wax. Curcuma, coptis, phellodendron and gardenia are the standard cooling quartet of the chapter's external powders, and hollyhock flower is the demulcent that gives the paste its slip. Mixing with cold water rather than oil is the point. A water paste on a hot eruption cools by evaporation as it dries, and it does not seal the surface the way a lard paste does. For 熱瘡 — a red, burning, non-weeping eruption — that is the right physical choice, and it is the same reasoning behind a modern cooling lotion. Nothing in it is hazardous, and as a short-term cooling application it is harmless. It is not a treatment for anything infected, and a hot spreading eruption with fever is not something to dress and wait on. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
