Interacting Rehmannia Decocted Pill

Gyogamjihwangjeon-won

한글 교감지황전원  ·  Pinyin Jiao Gan Di Huang Jian Yuan

交感地黃煎元

The preparation is the formula's signature: two geun each of raw rehmannia and fresh ginger are washed and pounded, their juices pressed out through cloth and the dregs kept; the rehmannia dregs are then fried in the ginger juice and the ginger dregs in the rehmannia juice, each until dry, and both powdered. The remaining ingredients are added, and all bound with honey into pills the size of crossbow pellets; one pill is dissolved in angelica wine. **Note on modern practice: postpartum seizures, psychosis, and heavy bleeding with clots are obstetric emergencies requiring immediate hospital care. Recorded as classical text.**

Translation

Treats black flowers seen before the eyes after birth, mania as though seeing ghosts, or wind stroke with the body arched backward like a drawn bow, or blood descending like pig's liver with griping pain of navel and abdomen binding into concretions. Raw rehmannia 2 geun — washed and pounded, the juice pressed out through cloth and the dregs kept; fresh ginger 2 geun — likewise, the juice pressed out and the dregs kept; then the rehmannia dregs are fried in the ginger juice and the ginger dregs in the rehmannia juice, each until dry, and powdered. Dry-fried cattail pollen 4 nyang; Korean angelica, corydalis, and amber, 1 nyang each. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of crossbow pellets; dissolve one pill in angelica wine and take. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most elaborate preparation in the Women's chapter, and its name states what the method is for: *interacting*. Rehmannia is cold and ginger is hot, and rather than combining them the formulary cooks each one's residue in the other's juice, so that neither arrives unaccompanied. Two pounds of each, reduced to a powder, for a shelf of complications — postpartum seizure, psychosis, hemorrhage with clots — that no single formula could actually answer. What survives is the technique, which is as sophisticated a piece of processing as the tradition produced. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
