Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治諸氣鬱滯. 一切公私怫情, 名利失志, 抑鬱煩惱. 七情所傷, 不思飮食, 面黃形羸, 胸膈痞悶諸證神效, 大能升降水火. 香附子一斤(長流水浸三日, 取炒), 茯神四兩. 右搗爲末, 蜜丸彈子大, 每一丸, 細嚼, 以<a href='/formulas/gangi-tang'>降氣湯</a>送下. 《回春》

Translation

Treats any qi depressed and stagnant — all vexation of public and private affairs, loss of purpose in fame and gain, depression and vexation. In damage from the seven affects with no thought of food, the face yellow and the form thin, glomus and oppression of the chest and diaphragm, and all such patterns it has spirit-like effect, and it can greatly raise and lower water and fire. Cyperus 1 geun, steeped three days in long-flowing water, taken out and stir-fried; poria with pine root 4 nyang. Clinical commentary 臨床

公私怫情, 名利失志 — affairs public and private that thwart the feelings, purpose lost in fame and gain. The indication is a description of a man whose career has failed him, and the signs that follow — no appetite, yellow face, wasting — are those of depression. Two medicinals: cyperus for the qi and poria-with-pine-root for the spirit. 交感, the intercourse of the trigrams, is the meeting of water and fire the formula is meant to restore, and the Women chapter's 1.36 gave the same pair for the same state in a woman. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
