Translation

Treats blade wounds and injury from blows, with the blood stagnant and congealed into a mass and agitated oppression to the point of fainting away. Rhubarb (wine-steamed), 5 don; angelica sinensis tails, 3 don; peach kernel, fourteen seeds, ground. Cut as one packet, decoct in wine, and take it at cockcrow; the next day the stagnant blood comes down and it mends. It is also excellent for fractures. — Samin 三因 (Donguibogam · Jesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The smallest of the chapter's purging formulas and the one with the clearest design. Rhubarb steamed in wine is milder and more blood-moving than raw rhubarb; angelica tails move rather than nourish; peach kernel breaks the clot. Fourteen seeds and three drugs, decocted in wine and given at cockcrow so that the stool comes in the morning — the name is nothing more than the dosing time. Read as a bruise treatment in an otherwise well patient this is reasonable and mild, and it is the one formula here that could be given without much risk. Read as the chapter reads it — 煩悶欲絶, agitation and oppression to the point of fainting away — it is being given to someone in shock, and the pallor and air hunger of blood loss are not relieved by moving the bowels. The claim that it is 亦妙 for fractures is a claim about bruising around the break, not about the bone. **Rhubarb is a purgative and should not be given to a patient who may be bleeding internally.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
