Clinical commentary 臨床

Four of the 四君子湯 drugs at the core — ginseng, white atractylodes, white poria, licorice — with astragalus, lotus seed and hyacinth bean to hold the stool, and costus, agastache and medicated leaven to move and digest. The total weight is about 9 grams of crude drug, almost all of it ginseng; this is a small, mild decoction, and for once nothing in it is dangerous. 欲成慢驚 — chronic fright about to set in. The leaf is describing the child in the hours before the convulsion, and it names the whole causal chain correctly: the diarrhoea first, then the refusal to feed, then the cold limbs and the clouding. What it cannot do is replace the water and salt that have gone out in the stool, which is the thing that actually decides whether this child convulses. That reading is set out in full at sinhyo-san-soa. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
