Translation

Treats cold panting. In cold panting the hands and feet are cold and the pulse sunken and fine. Ground cardamom, blast-fried dried ginger, perilla seed, magnolia bark, cinnamon bark, tangerine peel and honey-roasted licorice, 1 don each; aquilaria and costus, 5 fun each, both ground in water for their juice. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, decoct in water, and stir in the aquilaria and costus juice before giving. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula gives its own diagnostic criteria in the indication, which is rare: cold hands and feet with a sunken fine pulse. That is wheeze in a patient whose circulation is poor, and the treatment is accordingly all warming and qi-moving, with no ephedra and nothing cold. The two aromatics are ground in water and the juice stirred in off the heat, because aquilaria and costus lose their oils in boiling — a preparation detail the chapter is careful about wherever these two appear. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
