Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered, bound with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and coated with the cinnabar; 100 pills with salted water or warm wine on an empty stomach. Taken long, it blackens beard and hair and grants children. The appended discourse says — the heart abhors heat, the kidney abhors dryness; this formula clears heat and moistens dryness, supplements essence and boosts blood: the sagely medicine for treating heart and kidney (Dansim). Note on modern practice: cinnabar (朱砂) is restricted in contemporary U.S. practice; the coating is omitted in modern preparation.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑
治勞損, 心腎虛而有熱, 驚悸, 怔忡, 遺精, 盜汗, 目暗, 耳鳴, 腰痛, 脚痿, 久服黑鬚髮, 令人有子. 熟地黃ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ山藥ㆍ茯神 各三兩, 當歸ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ黃柏(鹽酒炒) 各一兩半, 山茱萸ㆍ枸杞子ㆍ龜板(酥灸)ㆍ牛膝ㆍ黃連ㆍ牡丹皮ㆍ鹿茸(酥灸) 各一兩, (生)甘草 五錢, 朱砂 一兩(爲衣). 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大. 朱砂爲衣, 空心, 鹽湯, 或溫酒呑下百丸. ○法曰, 心惡熱, 腎惡燥, 此方淸熱潤燥, 補精益血, 治心腎之聖藥也. 《丹心》
Translation
Treats taxation detriment with heart and kidney vacuous and hot: fright palpitations, fearful throbbing, seminal loss, night sweats, dim eyes, tinnitus, lumbar pain, and wilting legs; taken long it blackens beard and hair and grants children. Prepared rehmannia, dried raw rehmannia, dioscorea, and hostwood poria, 3 nyang each; Korean angelica, alisma, and salt-wine-fried phellodendron, 1.5 nyang each; cornus, lycium fruit, butter-roasted tortoise plastron, achyranthes, coptis, moutan bark, and butter-roasted deer antler, 1 nyang each; raw licorice 5 don; cinnabar 1 nyang, for the coating.
