Translation
Treats arm pain. It is neither wind nor phlegm — it is stagnation of Qi and Blood. Turmeric 3 don, white atractylodes 1.5 don, notopterygium and licorice 0.25 don each. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Su)
Clinical commentary 臨床
The differential diagnosis is stated in the formula's own text — not wind, not phlegm — which places it directly opposite the phlegm-rheum formulas of the following section. Turmeric at 3 don dominates the packet; the tiny quantities of notopterygium and licorice serve only to guide upward and harmonize. A minimal, well-aimed formula for the shoulder that hurts in one fixed place. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
