Notopterygium and Teasel Decoction

Ganghwalsokdan-tang

한글 강활속단탕  ·  Pinyin Qiang Huo Xu Duan Tang

羌活續斷湯

Cut and made into one packet with 3 slices of ginger, decocted in water and taken. The source explains the substitution: in Dokhwalgisaeng-tang the mistletoe is often not the genuine article, and other mistletoes are substituted for it with no small harm — therefore the mistletoe is dropped and teasel root put in its place, and notopterygium replaces pubescent angelica; the effect is markedly better.

Translation

Treats leg qi with Liver and Kidney vacuous and weak, the sinews cramping and the bones aching. Notopterygium, saposhnikovia, angelica dahurica, asarum, eucommia, achyranthes, gentiana macrophylla, teasel root, prepared rehmannia, Korean angelica, ginseng, white peony, red poria, cinnamon heart, and cnidium, 5 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. — In Dokhwalgisaeng-tang, genuine mulberry mistletoe is not to be had, and the world substitutes other mistletoes for it, with no small harm. Therefore the mistletoe is now removed and teasel root put in its place, and notopterygium replaces pubescent angelica; the effect is markedly better. — Byeonui 辨疑 (Donguibogam · Jok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A formula created out of a supply problem, and the source says so openly: genuine mulberry mistletoe was hard to get, counterfeits were doing harm, and so it was replaced with teasel root. That is a candid piece of pharmacognosy — an admission that adulteration was common enough to justify redesigning a classic formula around it. The claim that the substitute works better is the author's own. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
