Major Saposhnikovia Decoction

Daebangpung-tang

한글 대방풍탕  ·  Pinyin Da Fang Feng Tang

大防風湯

Cut and made into one packet with 5 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decocted in water and taken. It dispels wind and orders the Qi, quickens the blood vessels, and fortifies the sinews and bones. **Note on modern practice: a hot, swollen knee with wasting and inability to walk requires urgent assessment — septic arthritis is an emergency and joint tuberculosis is treatable when identified.** Aconite is a regulated toxic medicinal.**

Clinical commentary 臨床

The governing formula for crane's-knee wind, and its design answers the paradox of the illness: the knee is inflamed and swollen while everything around it is wasting, so the formula must build and disperse at once. Eight of the fifteen ingredients are tonics. Note that it is indicated specifically after dysentery — the chapter's observation that this arthropathy follows a gut infection is one modern rheumatology would recognize under a different name. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
