Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治大小便不通. 赤皮甘遂 二兩, 煉蜜 二合, 和勻, 每一兩分四服, 日進一服, 蜜水調下. 《得效》

Translation

Treats both passages not passing. Red-skinned kansui, 2 nyang, and refined honey, 2 hop, mixed evenly; divide each nyang into four doses and take one dose a day, stirred into honey water. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Kansui is one of the harshest purgatives in the pharmacy and is given here with honey to blunt it and in divided daily doses rather than at once, which is the only responsible way to handle it. Even so the dose is large. Its diterpene esters are severe mucosal irritants and the margin between purgation and poisoning is narrow. **This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
