Donguibogam

Translation

Treats the qi neither rising nor descending, with the stool bound and inhibited and the urine red-yellow. Head powder of black morning-glory seed, rhubarb, areca, bitter orange immature fruit, tangerine peel and scutellaria, equal parts. Powder, boil ginger juice into a paste and make pills the size of a paulownia seed, and take thirty to fifty in a thin ginger decoction. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Both passages inhibited together is the section's organizing complaint, and this is its standing pill: two purgatives, two qi movers, one cold drug, with ginger throughout to protect the stomach. Morning-glory seed acts on the water and rhubarb on the stool, which is why the pair recurs whenever the chapter means to open both. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
