加味理中湯

A different formula from the Hoechun 加味理中湯 of the cold chapters, which adds blast-fried aconite and cinnamon to Ijung-tang for entrenched cold. This one adds the phlegm drugs instead and carries no aconite.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ijung-tang — ginseng, atractylodes, dried ginger and licorice — with Ijin-tang's poria, pinellia and tangerine peel laid over it, and asarum and schisandra added for the cough. The construction is the chapter's answer to its own diagnosis: 肺胃俱寒, both lung and stomach cold, so one formula for each and the two given together. This is the most used pattern in the whole cold-cough group, and the reasoning behind it survives in practice: a chronic cough with thin watery sputum in a patient with a weak appetite and cold hands is treated through the digestion as much as the chest. **Contains pinellia, toxic in the raw state and to be properly processed, and asarum, which modern pharmacopoeias restrict to smaller doses.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
