Translation

Treats an enduring diarrhoea that will not stop. Chebula rind, 1 nyang, half raw and half cooked; costus root, 5 don; coptis, 3 don; licorice, 2 don. Powder, and take 2 don each time stirred into a decoction of white atractylodes and white peony. — Bomyeongjip 保命 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Half the chebula raw and half cooked, which is the chapter's way of getting two actions from one drug — the cooked rind binds, the raw still clears — and a small amount of coptis so that the formula does not simply stop a bowel that still has heat in it. The vehicle matters as much as the powder: it is taken in a decoction of atractylodes and peony, so the patient receives the spleen support separately from the astringent. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
