Translation

For a stranger newly arrived in another region who does not take to its water and soil and so falls into sudden turmoil, with either vomiting or diarrhoea. Black atractylodes, 2 don; patchouli, magnolia bark, tangerine peel, ground cardamom, cyperus, pinellia and licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two jujubes and one bundle of juncus, and decoct in water. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Gwallan)

Clinical commentary 臨床

不伏水土 — not taking to the water and soil of a place — is the classical name for what a traveller gets on arriving somewhere new, and the formula is Gwakhyangjeonggi-san rebuilt around black atractylodes for damp. The indication is worth noting for its own sake: the Bogam recognizes travellers' diarrhoea as a distinct condition with its own prescription, and attributes it to the place rather than to the patient. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
