Yin-and-Yang-Refined Autumn Mineral Elixir

Eumyangnyeonchuseok-dan

한글 음양련추석단  ·  Pinyin Yin Yang Lian Qiu Shi Dan

陰陽煉秋石丹

Not a separate preparation but an instruction to take the two refinings together; the base text gives no composition of its own and refers the dosage to the preceding entries, so the ingredients stay empty. 雜方門 has no method for it either: this chapter holds 5.3.40 陰煉秋石法 and 5.3.41 陽煉秋石法 and nothing that combines them, so the only thing this chapter adds to the entry is the cross-reference to those two sections, now registered as the source texts of eumryeonchuseok-dan and yangnyeonchuseok-dan. The source_hanja printed here is the 虛勞門 leaf, which is this entry's only base text; it is not in the 雜方門 transcription and will not verify against that file.

治虛勞, 陰陽俱虛. 取陽煉ㆍ陰煉, 朝夕各一服, 服法見上, 須二藥相兼服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats vacuity taxation where yin and yang are both vacuous. Take the yang-refined and the yin-refined, one dose of each, morning and evening; the method of taking is given above. The two medicines must be taken in conjunction. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Heoro)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Not a formula so much as a third option created by combining the other two — the yang refining in the morning, the yin refining at night, for the patient in whom neither side is intact. The chapter lists it alongside Hyeontogobon-hwan and Yongju-hwan under Kidney and Gate of Life both vacuous, which is where it files the worst of its cases. 須二藥相兼服, the two medicines must be taken in conjunction, is the whole content of the entry, and it is worth noting what it implies: that the two refinings were understood as genuinely different substances rather than two names for one, even though both come out of the same source material. The two methods are now registered from 雜方門, and they show how thin the distinction actually is. Both are evaporation and recrystallisation of the salts of human urine; the 陰 method settles, washes and sun-dries, the 陽 method goes on to fire the residue in a luted crucible until it melts and sets glassy white. The product of either is largely inorganic salts with trace steroid residues, the fired one carrying less of the organic fraction. Taking both morning and evening is, chemically, taking the same salt twice. **The medicine is refined from human urine and is a human-derived material. It is not prepared or used in contemporary practice. This entry is recorded for textual and historical completeness only.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
