Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑
治燥痰, 鬱痰, 乾嗽. 瓜蔞仁 一兩, 貝母 炒 五錢, 半夏 製 二錢. 右爲末, 蒸餠和丸菉豆大, 薑湯下百丸. 《丹心》
Translation
Treats dry phlegm, depressed phlegm and dry cough. Trichosanthes seed 1 nyang; fritillaria (stir-fried) 5 don; pinellia (processed) 2 don. Powder them, make pills with steamed cake, mung-bean size, and take a hundred down with ginger decoction. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Damum)
Clinical commentary 臨床
Three medicinals in a five-to-two-and-a-half-to-one ratio, and the ratio is the argument. Trichosanthes seed and fritillaria moisten and dissolve; pinellia dries. In a dry cough pinellia would ordinarily be contraindicated, and here it is present at a fifth of the chief medicinal's weight — enough to keep the phlegm moving, not enough to add to the dryness.
