Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治寡婦勞證. 生乾地黃二兩, 赤芍藥一兩, 柴胡ㆍ黃芩ㆍ秦芃各五錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 烏梅湯下三五十丸. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the taxation pattern of women living alone. Dried raw rehmannia 2 nyang; red peony 1 nyang; bupleurum, scutellaria, and gentiana macrophylla, 5 don each. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 30–50 pills with a dark-plum decoction. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula for a diagnosis the chapter gives its own name and section: the taxation illness of women living without a partner — widows and nuns among them. Whatever one makes of its premise, the clinical picture it describes is recognizable and its treatment is coherent: raw rehmannia and red peony to enrich and cool the Blood, bupleurum and scutellaria to course what has bound, and gentiana macrophylla for the bone-level heat of long depletion.
