Clinical commentary 臨床

Half a heart-draining formula and half a red-guiding one, which is what the name says: the three cold drugs above and the draining route below, joined in one cup. The pattern is the patient whose fever has broken but who stays dull and heavy — heat left in the heart with nowhere to go — and the solution is to give it an exit through the urine, which is what juncus and talc do. Poria with the heartwood retained quiets the spirit; ginseng, ophiopogon and the rehmannia juice replace what the fever spent. The rehmannia juice stirred in at the end rather than decocted keeps its cooling, moistening part intact, which is the same reasoning as in the lily formulas. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
