Conduct the Menses Pill

Dogyeong-hwan

한글 도경환  ·  Pinyin Dao Jing Wan

導經丸

Pill formula, bulk amounts: powdered and bound with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; 30 pills with wine. **Note on modern practice: blister beetle (斑猫) is a cantharidin-containing toxic insect medicinal, not used in contemporary practice; rhubarb at this dose is a strong purgative. This formula is recorded for textual and historical completeness, not as a treatment protocol. Persistent amenorrhea requires medical evaluation rather than long courses of breaking medicinals.**

Translation

Treats the menses closed and not passing through, with lumbar and abdominal pain. Rhubarb 2 nyang; Korean angelica, cnidium, white peony, cassia, peach kernel, and licorice, 1 nyang each; dragon's blood resin 2.5 don; safflower 1 don; blister beetle, fried together with glutinous rice, 20 pieces. Powder the above and bind with honey into pills the size of parasol-tree seeds; take 30 pills with wine. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The heaviest of the chapter's opening pills, and the one that shows how far the tradition would go for a cycle that had closed entirely: two ounces of rhubarb driving downward, the Four Substances behind it, dragon's blood and safflower breaking, and twenty blister beetles fried with glutinous rice to temper them. Recorded here because a complete edition records what was actually written — including the prescriptions no one should now fill. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
