Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治積聚癥瘕, 腹脇如抱一瓮, 瘦瘠露骨, 一切氣積食積, 大便秘澁, 寒熱往來. 黑丑(頭末) 二兩, 大黃一兩半, 檳榔ㆍ靑皮各一兩, 羌活ㆍ川芎ㆍ陳皮ㆍ茴香(炒)ㆍ木香ㆍ當歸各五錢. 右爲末熬, 皂角膏和丸, 薑湯下五七十丸. 《類聚》

Translation

Treats accumulation, gathering and concretion, with the abdomen and ribside as though embracing a jar, emaciation with the bones showing, all qi and food accumulation, stool bound and rough, and alternating cold and heat. Black morning glory seed, first milling only, 2 nyang; rhubarb 1.5 nyang; areca and green tangerine peel 1 nyang each; notopterygium, chuanxiong, tangerine peel, fennel (stir-fried), costus and angelica 5 don each. Powder and reduce them, bind with gleditsia pod paste, and take fifty to seventy down with ginger decoction. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Jeokchwi)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The last of the general pills and the most legible. Morning glory seed and rhubarb drive downward, areca and green tangerine peel move qi, and chuanxiong and angelica cover the blood — no minerals, no drastic purgatives beyond the two. The image of embracing a jar is the same phrase used for Powong-hwan at 1.11.8, where it described ghost foetus; here it describes gross abdominal distension with wasting, which reads as ascites in a cachectic patient. **Contains morning glory seed and rhubarb, both purgatives.
