Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take — or powder finely and take 2 don stirred into warm wine. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One of the best-known formulas in East Asian medicine, and its design is a balance rather than an attack: peony at two and a half don governing the pain, three Blood herbs on one side and three draining herbs on the other. The indication's last clause is what earned it its reputation — used equally before and after birth, which is rare on a shelf where almost every formula belongs to one phase or the other. It remains in daily use across Korea and Japan for pregnancy discomfort, edema, and cycle pain alike. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
