Tangkuei Powder for Ironing

Danggwi-san

한글 당귀산  ·  Pinyin Dang Gui San

當歸散

Registered with the chapter suffix to distinguish it from the 當歸散 of the Women's chapter. The substitution note recommending 椒葉 for 頑荊葉 is the Bogam's own; vitex leaf was held to be mildly toxic.

Translation

For ironing and searing cold damp painful wind. Saposhnikovia, tangkuei, ligusticum sinense, pubescent angelica, schizonepeta spike and vitex leaf, 1 nyang each. Take 1 nyang of the coarse powder with 4 nyang of salt, stir-fry together until hot, put into a bag and iron with it; when it cools, change it. It is well to leave out the vitex leaf and substitute sichuan pepper leaf, which is also good. — Uirim Jipyo 醫林 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The milder of the chapter's two hot compresses, and the one worth keeping: six ordinary aromatic herbs with four parts salt, heated and bagged, with no aconite or scorpion in it at all. The Bogam adds its own substitution — leave out the vitex leaf and use sichuan pepper leaf instead — which is the compiler intervening on grounds of safety, and one of the few places in the chapter he does so. A reproducible and genuinely useful preparation for a cold aching joint. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
