Angelica Powder

Danggwi-san

한글 당귀산  ·  Pinyin Dang Gui San

當歸散

Powdered; 2 don per dose. The source frames it with the Inner Classic's principle of the seven depletions and eight boosts: when a woman's count of sevens is complete and the menses do not keep to their season, the Blood is in surplus — it must not be stopped. One should only bring it back to its season and free it of lumbar pain, and that is well enough. Note on modern practice: irregular or postmenopausal bleeding requires gynecological evaluation.

Translation

Treats a woman whose Heavenly Water has already passed its term, the menstrual vessels uneven — three or four months without flow, or coming twice in one month — with pain of the lumbus and abdomen. The Inner Classic speaks of the seven depletions and eight boosts: when a woman's count of sevens is complete and the menses do not follow their season, the Blood is in surplus, and it must not be stopped. Only bring it to follow its season and be free of lumbar pain, and that is well. Korean angelica, cnidium, dry-fried white peony, and dry-fried strip scutellaria, 1 nyang each; white atractylodes 5 don. Powder the above; take 2 don each dose. — Donguibogam · Po

Clinical commentary 臨床

The gentlest entry in the section, and the one with the wisest instruction attached: at the close of the reproductive years an irregular flow is surplus, and surplus is not to be dammed. The goal is stated as timing and comfort rather than cessation — bring it back to its season, take away the back pain, and let it finish on its own terms. Four Substances with scutellaria added and rehmannia left out: build the Blood, cool it, and do not hold it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
