Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治勞嗽神效. 半夏二錢, 五味子ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ陳皮ㆍ枳殼ㆍ杏仁ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ鸎粟殼(蜜炒) 各一錢, 細辛ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三ㆍ棗二ㆍ梅一, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats taxation cough, with divine effect. Pinellia, 2 don; schisandra, red poria, mulberry root bark, perilla leaf, tangerine peel, bitter orange peel, apricot kernel, ass-hide glue beads and honey-fried poppy capsule, 1 don each; asarum and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two jujubes and one smoked plum, and decoct in water. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A long formula that tries to do everything at once: pinellia and tangerine peel for the phlegm, mulberry root bark and apricot kernel to bring the lung qi down, ass-hide glue for the blood, schisandra and smoked plum to hold the lung, asarum to open it. The poppy capsule is what makes it 神效, divinely effective — it stops the cough itself. **Contains poppy capsule, the dried capsule of the opium poppy, a controlled substance, and pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state.
