Translation

Treats lockjaw that has entered the interior, with both stools bound, the urine red and sweating that will not stop. Chuanxiong, 1 don; rhubarb, notopterygium and scutellaria, 2 don each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water; purge to the measure of a slight loosening. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The interior stage, and the minor formula inverted: chuanxiong drops to a third of its weight and rhubarb comes in at full. The endpoint is the right one — purge until the stool loosens slightly and no further — and the indication is a coherent picture of a patient with bound bowels, dark urine and continuous sweating. In tetanus that combination is autonomic dysfunction, and purging it would be harmful; as a model of staged treatment, though, the three formulas of this section are the clearest in the chapter. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
