Gathered Immortals Incense

Chwiseonhyang

한글 취선향  ·  Pinyin Ju Xian Xiang

聚仙香

Four of the materials are unregistered and are left out of the ingredient list — 沉束香 (not the same word as 沈香 agarwood), 黃烟香, 黑香 and 欖油. 狼苔 is entered: the leaf's own gloss identifies it as 艾蒳香, the same pine moss asked for in 瑞雲香毬, where the transcription writes it with the composed-glyph notation ▼(艹/納) and here with 蒳, the character that notation stands for. 㷔硝 keeps the transcription's glyph, which is the form the corpus prints elsewhere. The leaf says 右七料, the seven materials, and then lists fourteen; the seven are presumably the dry aromatics that go into the two packets, the four liquids being melted separately and the borneol, musk and saltpetre added after, but the count as written does not come out, and it is left as the text has it. The source label 中朝傳習 occurs nowhere else in the corpus and is romanised here as Jungjo Jeonseup, "learned by transmission from China".

Translation

Gathered Immortals Incense. Chimsok incense, 2 nyang; sandalwood, 1 nyang; clove, sand ginger, wolf-moss — that is, ainap incense — yellow smoke incense, black incense, olive oil, storax oil, benzoin resin, honey and saltpetre, 5 don each; borneol and musk, 1 don each; bletilla, 3 nyang. Powder the seven materials and divide them into two packets. Set a small pan on the fire and put in the olive oil, storax, benzoin and honey to melt; take it off and let it cool to lukewarm, then put in one packet of the aromatic powder together with the borneol, musk and saltpetre, and stir until thoroughly blended. Take the other packet of dry powder for a dusting powder, dust it over the hands, and smear and rub the paste onto a bamboo core; dry in the shade and burn. ○ It is also called Cheongwon Incense. — Jungjo Jeonseup 中朝傳習 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A joss stick made the way joss sticks are still made: a wet aromatic paste smeared onto a bamboo splint, with bletilla mucilage to hold it on and the dry half of the powder used to keep it off the maker's hands. The four resins and oils are melted first and the volatile things — borneol, musk, saltpetre — go in only once the melt has cooled, which is the one piece of real technique in the leaf, since they would be driven off or worse by the hot pan. The saltpetre is there to make the stick burn evenly rather than for any scent: it is an oxidiser, and it is the reason the paste keeps smouldering on its own. 一名淸遠香, also called Cheongwon incense, ties this leaf to the 香譜 table a page earlier, where 淸遠 is one of the named blends. **Contains musk (麝香). Musk deer are protected under CITES and the drug cannot lawfully be traded; it is not to be sourced.** Nothing here is therapeutic, and burning incense in a closed room means breathing combustion particulates. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
