沉束香, which heads the formula, is not among the registered medicinals and is not the same word as 沈香 agarwood; it is left out of the ingredient list rather than resolved to a near neighbour. 八角 is likewise unregistered. 甘松香 is entered as 甘松 (gamsong), the registered form of the same drug.

Translation

Lotus Incense. Chimsok incense and white sandalwood, 2 nyang each; loosestrife herb, nardostachys and sweet grass, 1 nyang each; clove, sand ginger and star anise, 7 don each; small borneol, 5 don; bletilla, 4 nyang — or 5 nyang. Grind them to a powder, mix with water and roll into rods the thickness of a chopstick, dry in the shade and burn. This is the small-wick method of the lotus incense. — Sokbang 俗方 (Donguibogam · Japbang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

An incense stick, and the only compounding step that matters is the last drug: bletilla, four or five nyang of it, whose mucilage is what lets a water-mixed aromatic powder be rolled into a rod the thickness of a chopstick and hold together as it dries. Everything before it is scent — sandalwood, loosestrife, nardostachys, sweet grass, clove, sand ginger, star anise, borneol. 芙蓉小炷法, the small-wick method of the lotus incense, names the form rather than any action: a thin self-supporting stick rather than a pill or a cone. The leaf gives no indication and claims no effect, and none should be read into it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
