Donguibogam

Translation

Makes drinking not intoxicate. Kudzu root, white cardamom, amomum, and clove, 5 don each; fermented gallnut and licorice, 2.5 don each; quince 4 nyang; dry-fried salt 1 nyang. Powder the above — even one who cannot drink wine, taking 1 don stirred into warm wine, at once becomes able to drink. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Naesang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The chapter at its most sociologically honest — a prescription for the banquet, not the disease, its name a poet's word for the drunkard's homeland. Quince and fermented gallnut line the stomach, salt and spice steady it, and the impossible promise ('even a non-drinker becomes able') tells you exactly how heavy the social obligation to drink once weighed. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
