Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癲癎惡病. 鴟頭 一枚(燒存性), 黃丹ㆍ皂莢(酥灸) 各五錢. 右爲末, 糯米糊和丸菉豆大, 飮下二三十丸. 《濟生》

Translation

Treats withdrawal-epilepsy as a malign disease. A kite's head, one (burnt with its nature preserved); minium and gleditsia pod (roasted with butter), 5 don each. Powder them, make pills the size of a mung bean with glutinous rice paste, and take twenty or thirty with a drink. — Jesaeng 濟生 (Donguibogam · Sin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

**This must not be prepared.** 黃丹 is red lead, lead tetroxide. The kite is a protected bird of prey, and the thinking behind using its head is sympathetic rather than pharmacological — the bird that does not falter in flight against the disease that makes a man fall. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
