Translation

Treats the food malaria. Bupleurum, pinellia, scutellaria, tsaoko, white atractylodes, red poria, magnolia bark and green tangerine peel, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut them up and make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water and take. ○ This formula is Minor Bupleurum, Calm the Stomach and Two Aged Drugs combined into one. One version adds 2 don of dichroa, decocts it, leaves it out overnight in the dew and takes it at the fifth watch to cut the malaria short; that it does not make the patient vomit is what makes it excellent. ○ It is also called Cheongpi-tang. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haehak)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Immun does the analysis for you: Sosiho-tang, Pyeongwi-san and Ijin-tang folded into one. Bupleurum and scutellaria hold and cool the half-exterior where the malaria sits, magnolia bark and green tangerine peel move the stagnant middle, pinellia and poria turn the phlegm, white atractylodes and licorice keep the spleen standing, and tsaoko is the chapter's warm aromatic for malarial cold. The variant is the interesting part. Add 2 don of dichroa, dew-expose the decoction and give it at the fifth watch, and you have a 截瘧 formula — and the Immun's praise is specifically that this way of giving dichroa does not make the patient vomit, which is the usual price of the drug. That is the chapter's whole technique for dichroa in one line. A caution sits at the end of the taxation-malaria section and applies here: in enduring malaria from original qi vacuity, reaching for Cheongpi and for 截瘧 formulas often kills the patient, and Bojungikgi-tang is what is wanted instead. **The variant contains dichroa (常山), a powerful emetic that is hepatotoxic. That version must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
